Traffic Safety Data

Safety is one of the criteria used to identify and prioritize needed projects for the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). The Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT) safety engineers measure the safety index of each highway segment, considering both the frequency and severity of crashes. UDOT then applies a safety prediction model to identify the segments which have a significantly higher safety index compared to similar highway segments in the region (volume, lanes, speed, functional class). The Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) uses this crash prediction data to identify and prioritize projects that correspond with highway segments and have crash rates higher than expected. Ultimately, specific safety improvements will be included in these projects.
